Interesting Effects of Meditation on the Brain

effects of meditation on the brainA recent article pointed out some of the interesting effects of meditation on the brain.  These effects of meditation on the brain are summarized in the video above.

Essentially, a recent study suggests that meditating for just a half hour a day can actually transform the makeup of the brain.

A New York Times blog article reviewed an eight week study that followed a group that meditated for 30 minutes a day.

What were the effects of meditation on the brain?

The article reported that MRI scans showed an increase in the gray matter in the area of the brain associated with memory and learning (the hippocampus) and a decrease in the gray matter in the area of the brain associated with stress (the amygdala).

The type of meditation used during this study of meditation and the brain was called “mindfulness meditation.”  Mindfulness meditation basically involves focusing the attention of the mind on one thing instead of letting it wander.  In a previous post we mentioned the power of breath exercise for stress relief.   Hence, one method of mindfulness meditation might be to focus on your breathing.

Regardless of the exact method of meditation you choose to use, the effects of meditation on the brain seem to be highly beneficial.  As a result you might want to add some meditation to your daily routine if you don’t already do so.   Your brain will thank you!
