A Child’s Brain Compared to the Internet

childsbrainI came across an interesting video that compares the growth of the child’s brain to the growth of the internet.  Not as farfetched as it may initially seem!

The brain power video is called Brain Power:  From Neurons to Networks and was directed by Tiffany Shlain and her team at the Moxie Institute.   The film was made from a new crowd-sourcing technique called Cloud Filmmaking.   Essentially it draws on the collaborative efforts of those on the internet using social network contributions among others.   There is also a TED book that accompanies this film and can be purchased at http://letitripple.org.

One of the questions that this video explores is “how are we shaping our brains?”   It then looks at the similarities between a child’s brain and that of the internet.   The video explores the notion that throughout history folks of whatever time period have compared the brain to the ruling technology of the day.  Today, the ruling technology is the internet.

One thing I found fascinating was the number of connections in a child’s brain.  It had far more connections than the internet!

As the video highlights, we’ll want to watch what exactly we expose our children to as well as how we help grow the internet itself.
